Thermo-fluid dynamic analysis of industrial refrigerating machines

The main objective of the research is the thermal-fluid dynamic characterization of plate heat exchangers as a function of the new ozone friendly refrigerants, with special concern with refrigeration applications. Heat exchangers currently under testing, of the maximum power of 150 kW, are both for evaporation and condensation. The following refrigerants will be used in the tests:

R 134a, R 22, R 407C and R 410A.

These are the proposals for the long term replacement of the old refrigerants, according to the guidelines of the Montreal Protocol. Characterization of plate heat exchangers for domestic air-conditioning is under way.

Physical insight is being pursued after a 'black box' analysis of the exchangers. The experimental programme is carried out on the COMHETA facility.
